Formulation development, batch production and quality control for paint and coatings manufacturers using Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
Solution Details
COSMO Coatings & Paint is an industry offering for recipe-based, batch-oriented manufacturers of paints, varnishes, lacquers, enamels and related coatings. It connects product development, manufacturing, quality assurance and supply-chain processes within Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
Formulation development and production scale-up
Develop formulations using component percentages, proportional shares and quantities. Development structures allow early-stage recipes to be recorded before every material has a complete item master record, with text used to describe materials and manufacturing instructions.
Move a formulation into a laboratory structure for pilot production, then into a manufacturing structure for commercial use. Laboratory production orders bring trial batches into material and capacity planning. The commercial manufacturing structure connects the finished item with its recipe, bill of materials, routing and instructions, retaining the relationship between laboratory development and production.
Recipe versions and manufacturing specifications
Manage recipes, bills of materials, routings and production instructions as connected manufacturing data. Recipe and bill-of-material versions record changes over time, while comparison matrices help users examine component proportions across alternative recipes and versions.
Production variants accommodate differences in products and manufacturing quantities. Linked routings define the operations required for manufacture, and manufacturing dimensions provide additional criteria for finding items and organising production information.
Batch production and manufacturing instructions
Prepare production orders from manufacturing specifications and transfer component requirements, routing operations and instructions into execution. Production simulation helps users examine expected consumption and output before manufacture. Simulation from sales orders also helps assess ingredient availability for proposed production.
Track manufacturing dates and maintain lot-number continuity between bulk production and subsequent packaging. Rich-text instructions can accompany recipes, routings and production orders, keeping operational guidance connected to the work.
Production planning and sequencing
Use planning pools to review production orders and component pools to examine their material requirements. Sequence planning connects the order sequence at work centres with resource or material shortages, detailed scheduling and production feedback.
Planners can schedule towards required delivery dates, fix selected orders so their calculated dates are retained, defer work and control rescheduling. Graphical planning displays production work and capacity on a timeline, with drag-and-drop scheduling and visibility of capacity conflicts.
These functions help planners manage the relationship between production priorities, material requirements and available capacity.
Manufacturing resources and shift scheduling
Derive personnel requirements from the capacity needs of production operations. Assign resources automatically or manually according to availability, qualifications, skills and teams.
Shift scheduling accommodates employee absences, individual shifts and alternating shift patterns. Graphical views and time-period reports connect the production schedule with the personnel needed to execute it.
Product costing and price scenarios
Build configurable calculation schedules that assemble direct costs, overheads and additional charges. Item and capacity calculation groups structure the cost elements used in each scenario.
Evaluate product costs, production lot sizes, target values, contribution margins and prices. Currency-dependent calculations support alternative commercial scenarios, and actual production costing allows comparison with the initial estimate. This connects formulation choices and manufacturing execution with commercial evaluation.
Quality inspections and test management
Define versioned test plans, test methods, sampling arrangements and measurement specifications. Manage test orders and test incidents for incoming goods inspections, production inspections, retesting and ad hoc checks.
Record measurements and evaluate them against the relevant specifications. Operation-specific test plans connect inspections with manufacturing steps, while the inspection record remains associated with the material and production process.
Quarantine, release and inventory status
Control whether goods may proceed through subsequent processes using lot and serial-number statuses. Stock can remain quarantined or blocked until the required inspection and release decision is complete. Test results can trigger status changes automatically.
Update lot information and split or merge lots to reflect inventory organisation and inspection decisions. These controls connect quality outcomes with the availability of the corresponding material.
Lot traceability
Maintain external lot numbers, sub-lot identifiers and additional tracking information alongside inventory movements. Traceability connects received materials, manufactured batches, storage and shipment with the relevant lot status.
Lot-number continuity between bulk production and packaging helps retain batch identity through successive manufacturing stages.
Supplier evaluation and purchasing controls
Evaluate suppliers using quality, delivery quantity, delivery date and return criteria. Maintain rating history, classify suppliers, generate performance reports and recalculate ratings for defined periods.
Approved-vendor controls support purchasing from accepted sources. Purchase and sales delivery tolerances accommodate permitted differences between ordered and delivered quantities, while document header and line text communicate additional material or order specifications.
Certificates of analysis
Configure certificates of analysis for customer requirements and present the relevant product and batch quality information. Certificate statuses and versions distinguish current and historical records, while reporting supports preparation of customer documentation.
This connects inspection and batch information with the quality evidence supplied alongside deliveries.
Platform and implementation
COSMO Coatings & Paint works with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and requires the Premium manufacturing experience. It extends the underlying purchasing, inventory, sales and manufacturing processes rather than replacing the Microsoft platform.
Implementation services are separate from the software offering. External systems, additional connectors and customer-specific development require their own scope and should not be treated as standard included functionality.
