Manage recipes, tools, batch production and quality for plastics manufacturers in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
Solution Details
COSMO Plastics extends Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central for manufacturers that need to coordinate material formulations, machine and mould combinations, batch production and quality-controlled inventory. It addresses injection moulding, extrusion and plastic sheet thermoforming, including manufacturers of films, sheets, profiles, pipes, tubes, bottles and other plastic products.
Recipes and manufacturing specifications
Create manufacturing specifications that connect recipes and bills of materials with routings, tools, inserts and production instructions. Define material proportions using percentage shares or quantities, maintain recipe and bill-of-material versions, and compare formulations to understand changes in component composition. Production variants accommodate different manufacturing arrangements and order quantities, while manufacturing dimensions provide additional criteria for finding items and organising production orders.
Recipe version dates connect manufacturing orders with the applicable formulation. The recipe comparison matrix helps users review component shares across related recipes and versions when developing alternative products or changing an existing formulation.
Tools, inserts and production rates
Manage tools and inserts in relation to the machines and work centres on which they are used. Support single-cavity and multi-cavity mould arrangements and define output quantities for an operating period using cavity, cycle quantity and cycle time information.
Machine, tool and insert combinations determine production rates and operation times. Changing the combination on a production routing updates the applicable setup and run times, allowing planners to evaluate alternative production arrangements. Tool setup and ramp-up times contribute to the preparation time required before production begins.
Batch production, co-products and reclaimed materials
Connect manufacturing specifications to production-order components and operations. Carry detailed production instructions into production orders and simulate expected material consumption and output before manufacturing.
Manage secondary production outputs and reclaimed material alongside the main product. Reusable scrap can be maintained as inventory for subsequent production or separate sale. Incorporation controls identify which reclaimed or additional materials may be used in a recipe and limit their share of the formulation. This connects material reuse with recipe requirements and production-order consumption.
Cost and price calculation
Create configurable calculation scenarios that bring together direct material costs, capacity costs and overhead charges. Organise cost elements through item and capacity calculation groups and use calculation schedules to structure the analysis.
Compare batch sizes, target values, product costs, contribution margins and pricing scenarios. Expected and actual calculations connect product and order costing with recorded production expenses, helping users examine differences between the planned manufacturing arrangement and the completed order. Currency-dependent calculations support analysis where costs or commercial transactions involve different currencies.
Production sequencing, setup and maintenance
Use planning and component pools to review production orders and their material demands. Manufacturing dimensions help planners filter and organise work according to relevant production characteristics.
Sequence planning lets users arrange production operations by work centre, change their order and reschedule the affected work. Machine, tool and insert availability can be considered together, with capacity warnings highlighting overloaded resources or overlapping assignments.
Setup and maintenance jobs can be coordinated with production. A maintenance/setup matrix defines preparation requirements associated with changes between items, tools or manufacturing characteristics, allowing the relevant jobs and times to be placed within the production sequence.
Personnel and shift scheduling
Translate production-operation requirements into personnel needs for setup and processing. Define the required number of resources and relevant skills, then allocate suitable personnel using availability, qualifications and team assignments.
Resource and shift views show demand coverage and shortages across production orders and periods. This connects machine scheduling with the availability of people qualified to perform the work.
Purchasing, sales and production feasibility
Maintain approved vendors for purchasing and define acceptable delivery-quantity tolerances for purchase and sales transactions. Production simulation from sales orders helps users examine ingredient availability before committing to a manufacturing requirement.
Rich-text information on document headers and lines communicates purchase requirements, sales specifications and production instructions alongside the associated business transactions.
Quality testing and controlled inventory
Use versioned test plans, defined test methods and sampling arrangements to organise inspections. Manage test orders and incidents, record measurements and evaluate results against specifications. Incoming-goods inspections, inventory testing, re-testing and ad-hoc tests support quality decisions for purchased materials and stored products.
Control inventory availability through lot and serial-number statuses, including quarantine, release and blocking. Test results can trigger status decisions automatically. Lot splitting, merging and information changes support the management of inventory as testing outcomes and stock requirements change.
COSMO Process Manufacturing provides the manufacturing foundation, while COSMO Quality Assurance contributes testing and quality-controlled inventory processes.
Traceability and customer certificates
Track external lot numbers and additional lot or serial-number information to investigate material and product movements. Status information links traceability with the decisions governing whether goods may proceed through the supply chain.
Create customer certificates that relate lot or serial-number test results to general or customer-specific specifications. Consolidated testing history supplies the measurement results, while sales information connects the certificate with the relevant customer, order or shipment.
Supplier performance evaluation
Evaluate suppliers using quality, delivered quantity, delivery timing and returns. Maintain rating history, classify suppliers and generate performance reports. Configurable evaluation periods and periodic recalculation provide a consistent basis for reviewing supplier performance over time.
Platform and implementation
COSMO Plastics operates within Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and uses its manufacturing, purchasing, sales, inventory and financial processes as the underlying business system. Manufacturing operation requires the Business Central Premium experience.
Software scope and implementation services are distinct. The COSMO Plastics QuickStart service focuses on selected manufacturing, inspection, inventory-release and supplier-evaluation processes; it is not a complete Business Central implementation or a custom-development engagement.
