Manage configurable electronic devices, engineering changes and manufacturing costs in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
Solution Details
COSMO Electronic Devices supports electronics manufacturers working with configurable products, customer-specific assemblies and changing technical specifications. Built on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, it connects commercial product definition with engineering and manufacturing, helping teams maintain consistent specifications, review costs and coordinate production around the required device configuration.
Configure–price–quote and structured requirements
Sales teams can capture product requirements through structured checklists linked to the product. Checklist answers describe the requested configuration and provide variables for technical rules and calculations. Configured dependencies guide the selection of compatible options, while pricing logic supports preparation of the quotation.
The same specification can continue into the technical configuration process, connecting what is quoted with the components and operations required to manufacture it. This is particularly relevant when electronic devices are sold in multiple variants or with customer-specific options.
Product configuration and dynamic product structures
The product configurator combines checklist answers with a dynamic master bill of materials. The master structure represents the available product options; formulas and rules determine which components and operations apply to the selected configuration.
Configuration rules can calculate component quantities, setup times and run times, as well as determine whether individual positions are valid. The resulting order-specific structure gives sales and engineering a defined starting point rather than requiring them to recreate the product specification independently.
Order-specific bills of materials and engineering handover
Document bills of materials preserve the product structure associated with an individual quotation or sales order. Teams can adapt the checklist and bill of materials to the order’s requirements without treating every customer specification as an identical standard product.
Engineering can use a construction order as its work order for reviewing and developing the technical structure. It can modify the sales-created bill of materials or prepare a new structure before generating the production order. This connects the commercial specification with engineering review and subsequent manufacturing preparation.
Versioned product structures and linked technical information support the documentation needs of electronics manufacturers that must distinguish between configurations and revisions.
Cost calculation throughout the order lifecycle
Cost calculation connects quotations, sales orders, document bills of materials, engineering construction orders and production orders. Configurable calculation schedules allow teams to organise material and capacity costs, apply charges and compare different manufacturing quantities.
Preliminary calculations support quotation preparation. Concurrent calculations bring together the quotation, order and engineering structures with expected and actual production costs, allowing users to review how the cost position changes as the order progresses. Recorded engineering resource time can also contribute to the calculation.
This gives sales, engineering and production a common basis for evaluating customer-specific devices and understanding differences between the original estimate and manufacturing results.
Engineering changes and technical documentation
Engineering change management coordinates changes affecting product structures, drawings and operational documents. Change notices can be consolidated into engineering change orders, with tasks assigned to responsible users and departments.
Teams can identify affected purchasing and production documents, record the required changes and monitor task completion. Drawing and revision management keeps technical documents associated with the relevant product information, helping procurement and production work from the appropriate technical definition.
These capabilities address the need to manage changing electronics specifications while maintaining the connection between the change request, the affected product and the work required to implement it.
Centralised text management
Reusable text modules add commercial information, technical descriptions and manufacturing instructions to master records and transaction documents. Text can be associated with items, customers, vendors, resources and manufacturing master data.
Users can insert text manually or automatically as document headers, footers and line information in sales, purchasing and production. Language-specific text modules support communication with customers, suppliers and operational teams in different languages. Information can also be displayed as an on-screen message where it should guide the user without appearing on a printed document.
Supplier evaluation
Vendor rating evaluates supplier performance using defined criteria. Delivery-date assessment compares the actual arrival date with the promised receipt date, while quantity assessment measures differences between ordered and delivered quantities.
Quality assessments and additional evaluation criteria can contribute to the supplier’s overall rating. This gives purchasing teams a structured view of supplier reliability alongside the procurement of components and materials required for device production.
Quality assurance
Quality assurance provides test plans and test orders for documenting inspections within the supply chain. Test orders can be created manually or automatically for activities such as incoming goods inspection and manufacturing inspection.
Test plans combine the properties to inspect with the relevant testing information, providing a repeatable basis for recording results. Customer- and vendor-specific plans allow inspection requirements to reflect the applicable supply relationship.
Connecting inspection records with purchasing and manufacturing processes helps teams maintain documented evidence of component and product quality rather than managing inspection information separately from the operational records.
Graphical production and capacity planning
Graphical planning presents production orders and routing operations on a timeline. Planners can review scheduled start and finish times and move orders, lines or operations to different dates. Changes made in the graphical view update the associated production schedule.
A separate graphical capacity view highlights potential overloads at work centres and machine centres. Planners can open the relevant order-planning view from an overloaded capacity, focus on the affected resource and adjust the schedule. This connects the overall capacity picture with the individual production operations that require attention.
Platform and operational foundation
The offering extends Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. Standard Business Central supplies the underlying sales, purchasing, inventory and production transactions; COSMO functionality adds the industry-specific configuration, calculation, engineering, documentation, quality and planning capabilities described above.
The underlying discrete manufacturing functionality requires the Business Central company’s user experience to be set to Premium. Compatible Business Central and COSMO app versions must be selected for the deployment.
